At Ponoka Composite High School we believe that every student should have some sort of work experience before they leave our school. Off-campus education provides opportunities for senior high school students to explore and expand their career interests, skills and knowledge related to work and other life roles. They will gain valuable experiences that will be both positive and negative. This will teach them how to not only apply knowledge they have learned from school, but also learn new life experiences that they can take with them throughout their lives.
HCS 3000
Because of this belief, it will now be compulsory for every student in grade 10 to take the Health Care Services 3000 module which goes into depth about workplace safety. Regardless of whether your son/daughter will take work experience or not, this module will be helpful at some point in their lives. It teaches them how to conduct themselves at work in a safe and responsible manner; recent statistics report that the most often injured workers in Alberta fall between the ages of 14-24 years old. Eventually the students will find themselves in the work force and they should be aware of the rules and regulations of work place safety.
This module will take approximately one week of class time in which your son/daughter will be placed in a classroom for one period a day for five days. They will go through the module in those five days. It is also important to know that your son/daughter will not be negatively effected in their other courses as the school instructional hours are above the minimum required hours. Once completed they will earn one 30 level credit and then they will be eligible for the Work Experience program at PCHS or any school in Alberta. If it is not completed within the week, they may have extra time during Teacher Advisory days and/or they will have to complete this module for homework. There is no option to “opt” out of this module.
CTR 2310 and CTR 3310
If your son/daughter is in grade 11 or 12, they too will also be taking an additional course at Ponoka Composite High School. These two courses are 1 credit each. The 2310 is for grade 11’s, 3310 for grade 12’s. These two modules are about Career Transitions and tracking your progress not only through high school, but also through life. CALM 20 touches on career portfolios and CTR 2310 and 3310 cover the same material, except in greater detail. By learning the material in these modules, your son/daughter will gain the skills and attitudes that will increase the chance of them achieving their life goals.
Like HCS 3000, your son/daughter will use one week of class time (one period, five days) to complete these modules. If it is not completed within the week, they may have extra time during Teacher Advisory days and/or they will have to complete this module for homework. There is no option to “opt” out of this module. It is also important to know that your son/daughter will not be negatively affected in their other courses as the school instructional hours are above the minimum required hours.
